Be Smart

A tip from Photoshop User magazine 100 tips…

When your retouching, it’s best practice to work nondestructively so that you can go back at any stage and make alterations if needed.  Smart objects play a big part in the nondestructive workflow, but did you also know that by converting your layers into a smart object rather than say, creating a merged or combined layer, that you also virtually reduce the file size of the working file in Photoshop, which speeds up your computers processing speed, which in turn speeds up your workflow.  Now that’ working smart

Edge Sharpening Technique

Here’s a 10 year old tip from Scott Kelby,  Sharpening that doesn’t use the Unsharp mask filter, but leaves control over the sharpening even after it is applied.

  • Open the photo
  • Duplicate the background (Control or Command J)
  • Go to filter, under Stylize, emboss, leave settings at the default or increase height to 5 or more. Press OK
  • In layers palette, change blend mode to Hard light.  This removes the gray colour from the layer but leaves the edges accentuated, making the photo sharper.
  • If the sharpening seems too intense you can control the effect by lowering the opacity of the layer

Cool eh!

CS3 Tip

Black and White 101

Black and White could not get any easier.  Open and image. Choose image}Adjustments}Black and White.  Instead of using all of the sliders that are in the dialog box, click on different areas of the image that you want to make darker or lighter and drag-left to make them lighter, right to make them darker.

Getting back to default colours

In most if not all versions of PS, if you press the “D” key you will reset your foreground and background colours to black and white.

To switch the foreground and background colours press the “X” key.

Easy!

If you want to select a specific colour to paint with use the eyedropper tool to select (left click in windows) a colour anywhere on your image
